Types of Heroin Addiction Rehab Centers
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, about 23% of the individuals who use heroin become dependent on it. Overcoming the physical withdrawals from heroin is just the beginning of a long-term effort that requires changes in daily life routines and consistent diligence in avoiding people, places, thoughts, and other things that can trigger a relapse. Easier said than done, heroin addicts have many different problems affecting their recovery including medical, social, co-occurring mental health or substance abuse disorders, familial, vocational, legal, and economic problems.
A variety of strategies have been developed with the most effective treatments combining counseling, behavioral therapies, medical, psychiatric, peer and social support services with medication assistance using methadone or buprenorphine. Long past the limitations of methadone clinics in highly populated cities however, heroin addiction rehab centers are more accessible, affordable, and effective than ever before.
Opioid Treatment Programs
Oversight of medication assisted treatment for heroin addiction ultimately lies with the SAMHSA where Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) providers must be certified and accredited to provide up-to-date and quality care along with medication dispensing under the current federal, state, and local laws. An OTP provider can provide services in an inpatient or outpatient setting or a variety of treatment settings including private and for-profit facilities, hospitals, affiliated hubs, and sometimes, physician’s offices.
Special licensing and certification requirements are needed for methadone providers to treat heroin addictions although the medication may be prescribed for the treatment of pain under careful DEA restrictions. Buprenorphine used in the treatment of heroin addictions is not as highly regulated with monitoring and compliance that promotes ease of access, confidentiality, and effective treatments now made available in doctor’s offices nationwide.
Types of Rehab Centers

Inpatient rehabs offer group counseling.
People seeking heroin addiction treatment have different needs and preferences. Some may prefer a holistic or spiritual rehab and some luxury, expensive, private and secluded, or simply the most affordable. Every one offers different types of services and support, amenities, resources, costs, durations, staffing, and programs to either choose from or meet unique needs.
The least restrictive level of care is generally in an outpatient heroin addiction rehab that allows the patient to remain involved in their work, school, family and social obligations while participating in the program and attending sessions at scheduled times.
An inpatient heroin addiction rehab requires the patient to remain at the facility around the clock, but, may be more suitable for those who have a history of unsuccessful rehab attempts or special needs such as chronic medical or psychiatric problems that could place their safety in jeopardy. Inpatient rehabs typically offer intensified and specialized services supported by staff that help to optimize health and recovery for longer durations.
Residential heroin addiction rehab centers are also live-in settings offering cooperative support from other members and indicated for patients who need support to ensure safety and who would be unlikely to remain engaged in treatment otherwise.
