Reasons to Choose Inpatient Rehab for Men

All-male rehab programs help men grow their support network in recovery.
Inpatient rehab can be necessary to your recovery, depending on your needs. For many men, these facilities can be highly important to the recovery process. If you are a man thinking of attending inpatient rehab, consider the following reasons why inpatient rehab may be a good choice for you before making a final decision.
Good for Those with Multiple Disorders
Inpatient rehab is actually very beneficial to those who are struggling with multiple mental disorders. For many addicts, one substance is not the only issue. According to a study from the NCBI, there is a “high prevalence and increased risk for consequences with simultaneous polydrug use of alcohol and prescription drugs.” A man with multiple substance use issues should consider inpatient therapy as it can be more helpful by creating a controlled environment where he is not tempted to do one drug or several.
Also the NIH states that “many men do not recognize, acknowledge or seek help” for issues like depression. Often, men can turn to other substances to help with these problems, only ending with substance abuse disorders or addictions. In an inpatient treatment program, a man may be able to discover why he drinks or takes drugs and whether or not that addiction actually stems from another major disorder. He can also find help for it in one of these facilities.
Other disorders that may occur simultaneously with substance abuse are:
- Depression
- Bi-polar disorder
- Eating disorders
- Anxiety disorders
- Schizophrenia
All-Male Inpatient Facilities
In many facilities, groups of patients are broken up by similarities, in order to allow for a more inclusive experience. There actually exist many all-male inpatient facilities where male patients can relate to one another based on more common experiences. This way, a bond can be built more easily in group therapy and patients can experience inpatient rehab with others who have had many similar experiences.
Lack of Social Support
Many men do not want to discuss their issues with substance abuse with those they love. Sometimes, this can make having a strong social support system of family and friends difficult, leading to a feeling of isolation for the patient. A study from the NCBI states that patients who have “poor social support system[s] are predicted to have a better outcome in inpatient treatment.”
While many men can find support at home, some cannot or do not choose to, at least at this early stage of recovery. A man who attends inpatient rehab can learn good ways to communicate with others through therapy and work on his recovery on his own at first. Then he can return home with a new and better ability to discuss his issues with loved ones.
Break from Stressors
For many men, the stressors of their jobs, home lives, and environments only worsen their substance abuse. The NLM states that “different people may feel stress in different ways,” and as men do not often seek help for their mental disorders, they usually act the same when it comes to stress. At an inpatient facility, men can learn new coping mechanisms as well as being able to take time off from these stressors and recover in a calmer, more controlled environment.
