Are there Free Drug Intervention Programs?
Recognizing a drug addiction is a huge step towards recovery. Concerned about the cost? We understand, one of the most common reasons people with addictions do not seek help is they are worried about the financial impact on their lives. Rest assured there are facilities and programs available that have a variety of programs at either no-cost or income based on a sliding scale to meet the needs of the drug-addicted person.

Free intervention services can get your loved one the help they need.
Thankfully, almost all states are able to offer outpatient and inpatient alcohol and drug treatment facilities that are free of charge. Most of these programs range from short-term detoxification centers, long-term residential treatment facilities to individual outpatient counseling at clinics local to the patient. Some even offer free drug intervention programs to help your loved one into treatment.
Due to the fact that mostly people who are already in the “system” through agencies such as the Department of Family and Children Services, local health departments or the criminal justice system, state-sponsored programs typically do have a long waiting list. These programs rely on tax dollars, so during difficult economic time, they can experience cutbacks in funding and some restraints on their services. Don’t get discouraged, there are programs for you!
What steps should I take to find out what’s out there?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), there are roughly 20 million Americans currently suffering from behavioral or addictive disorders.
Of these people, less than 10 percent are actively participating in a treatment program. Approximately 40 percent are unable to access treatment due to the cost being so high.
If cost alone is the reason you are not seeking treatment taking these steps initially may provide a greater peace of mind while you try to achieve recovery:
- Contact several rehab facilities in your area that may offer the type of program that interests you.
- Speak with the facility regarding the cost of treatment, including any ongoing expenses that you may incur during or after treatment.
- Don’t be afraid to ask if there is any financial assistance available based on your ability to pay.
- If you have insurance, check with your insurer prior to making the call to the facility to determine if your treatment will be covered.
What to look for in a treatment facility:
- Licensing and Accreditation. Ask if the program is accredited by the state. Ensure that licensed, well-trained mental health professionals and addiction specialists run the program.
- Program Outcomes. Accredited centers should have some statistics on their program’s successes.
- Discharge planning. What type of after care is available to you? The cost involved and referrals to services in your local community.
By taking these steps, as well as others that are specific to your situation, it is much easier to get a hold on your situation and whether or not you are in position to pay for treatment or get assistance through a free drug intervention program. Remember, you alone can achieve your long-term goal of recovery with the proper guidance and support.
