Are Drug Rehab Centers Free?

Most programs are paid, but free rehab is offered by some community groups, churches, and other groups.
For many people, drug addiction creates an array of financial struggles that can make paying for treatment even more challenging than ever. Finding free drug rehab, though challenging, is not completely out of the question—you just have to know where to look and what to look for. While the reality is that most rehab programs are not free, there are options available
Religious Services
Many churches and religious groups offer a range of helpful services to their members and to those in the community who are suffering from addiction. If you’re looking for free options for drug rehab, consider talking with your local pastor or priest about getting help. While not all religious groups offer such services, some will provide guidance and even free faith based counseling to those in need.
Sliding Fees
Many drug rehab centers offer a sliding fee structure that allows you to pay for treatment based on your ability to pay. Although most of these programs are not free, they will offer you an affordable rate that allows you to get the help that you need without worrying about extreme costs that you cannot afford. SAMHSA provides a directory of drug rehab centers that are free or that offer low cost treatment to those in need.
According to a recent report from the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, an estimated 4% of substance abuse treatment facilities provide treatment that is all free. Many others provide partially free treatment on a sliding fee scale.
Community Supported Programs
Certain programs, such as NA, AA, or similar support groups are supported by local communities and the founding members of the programs themselves. You may not find fully free drug rehab in these community supported programs, but you will find a number of different opportunities for support and guidance that can greatly improve your chances of recovery.
Government Backed Programs
Often times, if you’ve been in trouble with the law or have suffered from some type of health problem as a result of your drug addiction, you will be offered acceptance into government backed programs that offer free treatment. Many drug rehab centers are paid for by the government and operated by the government. Many receive government subsidies to provide patients treatment at low or no cost.
These programs provide the same high quality services that many paid treatment programs do but they are able to offer free treatment because it is paid for through tax money, donations and special events that raise funds.
