How to Talk to Your Family About Inpatient Rehab
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, millions of people suffer from drug addiction. You are not alone although you might feel very much abandoned by your family. The best solution to this is to talk about the addiction particularly if you want inpatient therapy. This type of residential treatment is extremely effective for most drug users. Unfortunately, it is difficult to approach your loved ones. Knowing who to talk to, what you should talk about, where and when you should talk might help make this bit easier.
Who Should you Talk to?
Deciding which family members you should talk to is a delicate matter. Pick family members you trust who do not use drugs themselves. It is far easier to talk to someone who does not use about inpatient rehab than those who do.
What Should you Talk About?

Only discuss your treatment decision with family members you feel comfortable with and that you can trust.
When you decide who to talk to, you will also need to know what to talk about. Talking about it is going to be difficult but it is helpful to be calm. A few things that you will need to do are:
- Explain the problem
- Tell them you have decided on inpatient treatment
- Explain to them why this is the type of treatment you want
- Let them know that you are serious
- Make sure they understand the steps you are taking
- Ask for their love and support during the time that you are away
It helps to keep things calm and rational. If that is a problem with a specific family member then do not be afraid to ask them to leave.
Where Should you Talk to Them?
You should pick a quiet neutral place to talk to them. Somewhere that you won’t be easily interrupted or overheard. The place is almost as important as who is with you when you are there. Places such as restaurants or bars do not make good venues for this talk.
The place needs to be quiet and private. Most of all you and your family should be comfortable. This is not a place or time for blame or confrontation but one to discuss and listen to ideas about what you should do and what you want to do.
When Should you Talk to Them?
You should talk to them when you’ve decided to seek treatment and establish a family support structure. This makes you stronger as you go through recovery. Family support is one of the most important things that you can have throughout your struggle with addiction.
When you talk to them, talk to them all at the same time so you do not end up explaining it several times. When you decide when to talk to them make sure you are not interrupting their work or time with their kids. This is not a discussion for children to be around for.
