Myths about Inpatient Rehab
Inpatient rehab is one of the most fictionalized types of drug treatment. You see it on television, in major movies, and even in books. Unfortunately, the myths surrounding inpatient drug rehab can make you avoid seeking this sort of treatment. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, inpatient rehab is one of the most effective types of rehab. It has one of the highest success rates and one of the lowest relapse rates.
Most people who go through inpatient detox report being better equipped to deal with the stressors of being sober than if they went through another form of treatment. This is why it is important to dispel the myths surrounding inpatient detox.
Myth 1: Only Severe Addicts Attend Inpatient Rehab
Addicts of all forms benefit from the inpatient environment. Anyone who needs or wants to get away from their triggers does well in an inpatient environment.
Myth 2: Inpatient Rehab is only for the Rich and Famous
There are government funded, sliding scale, and insurance covered forms of inpatient detox. Many of the inpatient facilities offer financial help to those who need it.
Myth 3: Rehabs are Like Hospitals

Most inpatient rehabs won’t keep you away from loved ones. They are often encouraged to visit and attend therapy sessions.
Although some rehab centers have hospital like detox facilities, most rehabs are designed to be homey rather than hospital like.
Myth 4: You will be Forced to do Things Against your Beliefs
The majority of rehab facilities are nonreligious and do not force anyone to go against their beliefs. Unless you are in a court ordered rehab, no one forces you to do anything except abstain from taking drugs.
Myth 5: All Inpatient Rehabs are the Same
Many rehab centers are vastly different in both what they treat and their treatment methods. Most rehab facilities outline their differences for you before you enter the facility.
Myth 6: You have to Quit Without Medical Help
Almost all rehab facilities have doctors on staff to help treat you both medically and psychologically. Unless you specifically ask for no medical treatment, most rehabs will offer some form of medical help while you are there.
Myth 7: Inpatient Rehab Cures Everything
Inpatient rehab gives you a start; it is not a cure all. There are many treatment options available during inpatient rehab but none of them cures everything that is wrong. They put you on the path to recovery.
Myth 8: You will be Kept from your Friends and Family
Most inpatient rehabs encourage friends and family to visit. Many even have family therapy sessions that you can partake in if you desire them.
Myth 9: You will be Kept Against Your Will
Unless the inpatient rehab is court ordered, most inpatient rehabs are not locked facilities. You are encouraged to complete the program but no one forces you to stay. In order to complete the rehab you do have to stay in treatment. If you leave you do have to start over again.
